Frequently Asked Questions
ZephyrEye? What the heck?
ZephyrEye is a Paintball Gaming System. It's a device carried by a player that allows him/her to know more data about the field. Depending on how it is configured, it may show teammate locations, opponent locations, flag locations, and more. It can also keep track of and display game scores.
So how does it track me?
All players on the field should be equipped with a ZephyrEye. Each ZephyrEye has a GPS locator and a digital transmitter, which can send and receive locations of all other ZephyrEye units in range.
What kind of range can I expect?
The transmitter equipped on the ZephyrEye can reach up to one mile with line of sight. In densely wooded areas or when the transmitter's line of sight is blocked, the range will decrease. However, upon setting up a game and joining a team, a "mesh network" is created, which means that one ZephyrEye can "bounce" signals off of other units. Therefore, all players must stay within at least one mile (or, if line of sight is obstructed, within transmitting range) of at least another player.
How accurate is the GPS?
Current GPS technology allows positional accuracy of up to 3 meters. At certain locations, in combination with error-reducing techniques, this margin of error can even be reduced to as little as half a meter. Generally speaking, the GPS error is not noticeable when gaming with the ZephyrEye on most fields. However, under certain conditions (such as heavy clouds, rain, or dense tree cover) the GPS may temporarily lose signal strength, and may require a player to move to more open areas to reacquire enough signal strength.
So you're saying I can cheat if I lose my GPS signal?
All part of the game. But if your ZephyrEye does lose its GPS signal, be advised that it won't report the locations of other players to you. Also note that some game types in the future may not always report the position of all players.
How do I mount this thing onto my marker?
Most likely, the ZephyrEye will be manufactured into a loader (see the conceptual art). Another possibility is it could be enclosed with a small plastic box that clamps onto the marker, or carried by a player.
When can I get my hands on one of these?
All in due time... It depends on several factors. If a manufacturer picks it up, it will be cheap and readily available. If no one bites, then it will be released as a kit. I expect ZephyrEyes to become available to the public sometime during 2008.
I think I'd like to buy one, but do you think I'll be able to afford one?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, arms, and legs ;). It's hard to tell until manufacturing begins, but the final price should be somewhere in the range of $175 to $250 USD.
